Mary Ward Black, Ph.D.

Coordinator of Assessment Services

Licensed Psychologist

Clinical Supervisor

MT #3185

Dr. Black has provided therapy and psychological evaluations in Bozeman for the past seven years. She serves as the Coordinator of Assessment Services at Big Sky Psychological Consortium, where she provides therapy and specializes in comprehensive psychological evaluations for adolescents and adults, with particular expertise in ADHD evaluations and diagnostic clarification. She strives to create a collaborative therapeutic relationship with her clients where they feel both supported and challenged.

In her therapy work, Dr. Black integrates cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches to help clients better understand themselves, recognize longstanding patterns that may be contributing to their current difficulties, develop practical coping strategies, strengthen their relationships, and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives. She tailors her approach to each client’s goals, strengths, and personal values.

Dr. Black also conducts comprehensive psychological evaluations for adolescents and adults who are seeking greater clarity about concerns related to attention, executive functioning, mood, anxiety, behavior, personality, trauma, and learning differences. Her evaluations are designed to do more than clarify a diagnosis. They include individualized recommendations to guide therapy, clarify treatment goals, inform medication decisions in collaboration with prescribing providers, identify practical strategies for everyday functioning, and support academic or workplace accommodations when appropriate. Whether clients are seeking answers for new or longstanding struggles, clarification of a previous diagnosis, or a clearer direction for moving forward, she provides thorough and clinically meaningful evaluations that offer insight and guidance for clients and their treatment teams.

Dr. Black earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Mississippi State University. She completed her APA-accredited predoctoral residency at Mississippi State Hospital, where she received advanced training in psychotherapy and psychological assessment across child, adolescent, adult, substance use, and intellectual and developmental disability services. She then completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Mississippi, where she provided individual and group therapy and specialized in crisis response and services for survivors of sexual assault. Since completing her training, Dr. Black has enjoyed working in private practice in Bozeman and staying connected with the local professional community. She is a member of the Montana Psychological Association and has given invited presentations at universities on ADHD diagnosis and psychological evaluation. She also provides clinical supervision to postdoctoral trainees and clinicians working toward their licensure at the practice.

Please reach out to Dr. Black to discuss whether therapy or a psychological evaluation may be a good fit for your needs. She accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, PacificSource, and Allegiance insurances, as well as private pay. Superbills are often an available option for clients seeking possible out-of-network reimbursement. She may be reached at (406) 624-6872.
